"If You Paid Attention, You'd be Worried Too" or Finit Finis Finish Omnious Omnium Shmomnious

The very special 47-50th Street/Rockefeller Center station has some very strange advertisements posted in the decrepit old clock boxes. You know, the ones overhead, the ones to which nobody pays attention too because the clocks are usually way off?

For some reason I thought that the ads that I've seen for a long time were cigarette ads. But recently I looked at them a little bit more carefully and realized that something was odd. The ads show a sunset over the forest and a flock of birds in the air. The caption says "Omnium Finis Imminet". Huh. Hello conspiracy theories.

Well, my crappy knowledge of Latin tells me that "omnium" means "all", "finis" means "end" and "imminet" since it sounds just like "imminent" means "is coming".

Apparently graffiti with this nice apocalyptic message has been popping up in other places. On the other hand, this is not graffiti, is it? At the very best this is a well executed hack.

Come Monday (well, if the end of the world is not going to happen before then) I am totally giving a call to Gannett Transit (formerly New York Subways Advertising Co) at (212) 297-6400 to figure out what's up with this.

Update.
I called Gannett Transit just to be kicked to voicemail, but it looks like the ad is legit. I've seen a whole bunch in West 4th Station and comments are rolling in about TV spots too. As commenters pinted out this is probably a "guessing game" ad for the new War of the Worlds movie or some stupid Sci-fi Channel movie or series. Well, at least nobody seems to be paying attention to the ads. None of the people I asked were able to recall what it was about.

Well, at least it seems that my humble blog ranks high in the very sparse search results for "omnium finis imminet", "omnium finis imminent" and the other creative ways to spell this slogan, so hopefully I'll gain some readers along the way.

Now, if this were an ad for Darren Aronofsky's Flicker, that would be way cool. But I am not even sure that he is filming it at all.

Another update
Wow, it looks like New York Times fact checkers are in hot water as the reporters totally pulled this out of their butts (or read on this in my blog as it was the top result on Google for a while) :

"The advertisements portray a flock of birds against an angry red sky, with a single phrase: Omnium Finis Imminet, Latin for The End of All Things Is Near. The advertisements, for Steven Spielberg’s movie version of H. G. Wells’s “War of the Worlds,” cost about $50,000. The film is to open in July."

They did post a correction later on. Here's the full ad from a recent Scientific American that my wife brought me today.

Note the Photoshop lens flare and the horrible font. Looks like their art director is about as competent as their marketing director. The letter "T" is probably made to look like the Orange County Choppers dagger logo to capitalize on the popularity of that show.

He heh, the show seems to have a stupid "X-Files" marries "Millennium" premise. The end of the world is approaching, and investigators are a physicist instead of Scully and a nun instead of Mulder. That's some sexy and original stuff. Just get a bad 80s rock ballad for a theme song and all the geeks mourning Star Trek will flock to see this.

After looking a while my best guess is the posters and TV spots with "omnium finis imminent" are a promotional campeign for the upcomming movie " War of the Worlds.

What is a "promotional campeign"? I know what a promotional CAMPAIGN is but not CAMPEIGN. YOU ARE SUCH DUMB ASS. Proofread your shit before you post it. By the way, the T (the dagger) figures into the miniseries. Be careful watching it. I don't want you to hurt yourself.

I just saw a 10 second flash of the words "Ominium Finis Imminet" or "The end of all is nearing" on the Sci-Fi channel. I thought I would let you know as your website was the first to come up when typed into google. I thought I remembered the phrase from the show "Millenium" or the movie "Fire in the Sky" but have been unable to determine exactly what it is about.

Yeah, I just saw the same thing on the SciFi Channel, I wasn't aware there were other ads already in place. Has me curious though. The ad style is reminiscent of those used for "Millenium."

Good marketing for a movie, much like AI. All of which was started by The Blair Witch Project.

I'd suspect War of the Worlds, but it seems too cool for one of the major movie houses.

Wed, 03/02/2005 - 02:16 — bullet (not verified)

I don't think it's war of the worlds, either. Comparing the two professional promos (subway and tv)to the WoW site, the color scheme is wrong, the font is different, and the birds - what's that all about? - are totally wrong. And I don't think Spielberg and Cruise need meme ads to generate buzz for a summer blockbuster.

Wed, 03/02/2005 - 06:05 — feverfan (not verified)

I absolutely do believe that it all has to do with the movie "War of the Worlds," and I believe some of you may come to agree with me.

The original War of the Worlds was done in 1938, I believe, and it was done in such a way that it incited panic amongst listeners of the broadcast. It made them think that it was truly taking place, the world was crashing in around them. It was a landmark moment. It's something that people still tell their grandkids about. It will never be forgotten.

I believe Spielberg would be smart enough to realize that if he's going to do War of the Worlds, on the big screen, that you also had to find a way to make people of today be a part of something they're hoping will be comparable to the impact in 1938. We're smarter now, or at least like to think we are, so if this were broadcast on radio, we'd all chuckle. We're people who survived Y2K (cough), and now people are saying that the end of the world is coming with all the wars. Something like this would, and has, caught our interest. And someday, we'll be telling our grandkids about it.

If I'm wrong and it's for something else, I hope that it's just as entertaining as that scenario. :)

Wed, 03/02/2005 - 12:15 — Andy (not verified)

Okay. I think this is probably some kind of underground campaign for the War of the Worlds movie, but I think a lot of the stuff people are seeing is just being done by copycats. Here's why:

Go here and look at the pictures. Only two of them (the one on the sidewalk, and the one with the symbol on the side of the building) could be real, as the others are mis-spelled. As for the fonts and color scheme not matching the website, the fonts don't, but the colors do, and the sound I heard on the SciFi Channel (during the X-Files, by the way), was also similar to the sound on the website's main page.

If this is truly a marketing scheme by Spielberg, applause is definitely in order. If it's not... Well I'd rather not go there.

Wed, 03/02/2005 - 12:16 — Andy (not verified)

PS The next Thursday the 10th of any month is this October (2005).

Wed, 03/02/2005 - 19:22 — Symon (not verified)

well, taking into account the controversy around the airing of the
original War of the Worlds, I think that Spielberg would try to emulate that. Perhaps the graffiti was made by people involved in the advertising campaign.

It reminds me of this sci-fi short story I once read where a studio makes a general Alien/Horror flick and designs animatronic robots to walk through city streets to frighten people and get them interested in the movie.

All in all, it's a great idea. If it is really for a movie, I'd definately see it. I mean, if it sucked, why would they spend so much money on ads?

Wed, 03/02/2005 - 21:04 — Rico (not verified)

That's interesting it's popping up at different places. Maybe there are some copy cat "street artists" out there?

Thu, 03/03/2005 - 00:13 — motoko (not verified)

There are posters wrapping a bunch of columns in the Times Square Station, near the 42nd street exit from the NRQW. No image, just the text. Glad to know other people are tracking this; even though I know it's viral marketing, it's still pretty grim to have to read "The End is Nigh" every morning on your way to work.

Thu, 03/03/2005 - 03:05 — steven (not verified)

yeah, thats gotta be kinda depressing in a way. AS far as I know, I'm the only one that saw it on TV out of the people I know. for some reason, I really doubt that the grafitti is advertising for the movie. that just seems kinda weird.

Thu, 03/03/2005 - 07:34 — Brian (not verified)

Wouldn't be the first time Spielberg has done something cool like this. Anyone remember the web based scavenger hunt coinciding with the release of AI?

Thu, 03/03/2005 - 08:11 — Marcos (not verified)

I hope all of you are wrong. I would love for this to be a promo of "Watchmen". That story has been hanging on the vine since it was published back in '87. I've heard that scripts, cast, and director had been firmed up over a year ago. Haven't followed it since, so I'm hoping this latin version of "The End is Nigh" is a screenplay modification of the doomsday homeless character's placard that was so prominent throughout the storyline. I'm hoping you all do know what I'm talking about: Alan Moore's, Watchmen? Published by DC? Anyone? Bueller?

Thu, 03/03/2005 - 08:35 — Jonathon212 (not verified)

First Time reader, First Time Poster - Fellow subway denizen...

My bet is on the Watchmen, like Marcos... The buzz on Cruise/Spielberg project is already out -- They already have equity in their current approach - cubicle speak. Whatever it is... It's definitely not a very effective "guerrilla campaign". I'm too jaded. If it appears on the subway, in those stupid clocks, it's obviously approved by the MTA. Our fare increase at work. *Sigh*

Imdb: "watchmen" in production 2006 and has the Aronofsky connection. I am pretty sure, it's not the "Left Behind" movie with Kirk Cameron, but maybe, maybe...

Also from ADTUNES.com Forum...

The phrase "Omnium Finis Imminet" is more familiar in its English translation
as "The End is Nigh". [Actually means literally : "we all are at the end, iminently" but since syntax barely matters in Latin... -Jonathon212] It's from the Anglican 'Book of Common Prayer' in Latin and refers to 1 Peter 4: 7 - "But the end of all things is at hand".Perhaps the poster you saw is for yet another forthcoming disaster movie...

Thu, 03/03/2005 - 08:45 — bullet (not verified)

Just some thoughts:

1. The mispelled chalk marks would make it an even smarter viral campaign, as would the high probability for copycats that see it and think it's cool to write "the end is coming" all over everything. I'm convinced of this even more so because it's NOT being done in NYC in favor of a straightforward commercial campaign. That viral stuff is so tired out there that no one would pay attention.

2. While I agree that SOMETHING should be done along the lines of an homage to Orson Welles and the original WotW, I would hope that Spielberg could come up with something better than this.

3. I think it's a NBC related show for two reasons: A) The TV spots have only been on NBC stations and I don't see why a movie studio would limit themselves. I'd buy it if it was a Universal picture (more NBC), but it's Paramount. So far we've got NBC and Sci-Fi, I've seen it on USA - a TON. Anybody seen it on Bravo? B) I used to work traffic for NBC (commercial and promo placement) and the cable stations do a piss poor job giving anything adequate separation unless it's a major advertiser, which movies always are. USA has been running it in every commercial break, leading me to believe it's got to be a promo spot, which means it's for an NBC product. I could be wrong, but I emailed a friend at Bravo to check. Let you know what comes up.

4. Would be much cooler if it was the Watchmen. Wishful thinking, though.

My two cents.

Thu, 03/03/2005 - 08:46 — Parthicus (not verified)

For the record:

Omnium = of everything/all things (genitive plural)

Finis = The end (nominative singular, the subject of the phrase)

Imminet = threatens/overhangs (3rd person singular, present tense, active voice)

So, "The end of all things threatens"

The phrase from 1 Peter 4:7 is "omnium (autem) finis adpropinquavit," as that verb provides "is at hand."

Promos for NBC'S upcoming show "REVELATIONS" with Bill Pullman and Natascha McElhone airing in APRIL...

NBC has made a premium six-figure commitment to the project, with producer David Seltzer being tapped to write the first two hours and a bible for the series. Much like ABC's upcoming Kingdom Hospital, the NBC project is designed to be self-contained however there will be the possibility of additional seasons should ratings merit.

Saw it last night after Law & Order and proceeded to discuss w/ my Mom how U.S. citizens are kept in fear by our media. I was affected, thought it was some government subliminal type shit, so getting into bed I was kinda freaked out. I get creeped out easily by this kinda shit. Anyways I came to the conclusion that if indeed it was a scare tactic used for control by the U.S. government/media, then it was my civic responsibility to fall asleep easily and without a thread of concern. I did just that, talked to a few other people about it today @ clinical rotations. I assumed it wasn't a marketing ploy because there was no small print on the screen. Anyways, I hope in fact it is a marketing ploy, and after viewing that crappy graffiti and all, am almost convinced it is. I agree with everyone that it would suck ass if it were for NBC's Revelations, and hope that if it ends up being for War of the Worlds, that it's only the beginning of a larger scheme. Peace.

At least the little regional newspapers. I also dont see why NBC would want to advertise a new series like that. It obviously worked how they wanted it to if thats what it is. I dont know, it all just seems weird to me that since people saw the advertisments, grafitti has shown up but still hardly anyone knows about it.

A loose translation of "Omnium Finis Imminet" is: "The End is Near."

The ad folks have been seeing is definitely for the DVD release of the third and final season of the TV show "Millennium" starring Lance Henriksen. How do I know ? Three things: 1) The phrase is set in the font Trajan which is the same font in the "Millennium" logotype. 2) At the end of the second season of "Millennium," a plague was being spread throughout mankind. The plague carriers, and the first to die from it, were birds. (So, that explains the print ads.) and 3) In the TV commercials sporting the same Latin phrase, a flash of the "Worm Ouroborous," the symbol of the fictitious "The Millennium Group," can be seen briefly at the end after the Latin phrase has vanished.

Yea, saw this on several bits of graffitti, as well as web jokes. Its latin that roughly translates to, "The end of all is near" Its looks alot like a Millennium ad to me, and the graffitti is probably just fun, kinda like how theres all your base graffitti everywhere too. Saw the ads on NBC and Sci-Fi and the font is the same as in Millennium which is about to release its final season on DVD. Also if you watch the ads closely (I recommend using TiVo or DirecTV or sumthin to rewind, theres a little flash of the orobouro (sp?) that was the millennium cults simbol near the end. Still, pretty neat ad campaign seeing by all the stir its caused.

I, like many of you, was weirded out by the ad after Law & Order Wednesday night. So weirded out, in fact, that I had to bust out my old Latin text books. I even enlisted the aid of some of my geek friends to come up with a translation. Anyway, here goes:

Omnium finis imminet translates to "The end of all men is threatened" or "The end of all men is imminent."

We're pretty sure that it's a good translation. Maybe it's some Feminist campaign slogan... ;)

Read this excerpt from an article published today on nytimes.com:

"Riders who board the shuttle at Grand Central Terminal and take the 90-second trip to Times Square were confronted this week with another series of advertisements - these applied directly to the white tiled walls, and wrapped around the stanchions, near the shuttle platforms.

The advertisements portray a flock of birds against an angry red sky, with a single phrase: Omnium Finis Imminet, Latin for The End of All Things Is Near. The advertisements, for Steven Spielberg's movie version of H. G. Wells's "War of the Worlds," cost about $50,000. The film is to open in July."

wrong. but it's ok. as i said. eventually you will all believe me.

Sun, 03/06/2005 - 02:20 — Mike C (not verified)

They've plastered Grand Central Station with these "Omnium Finis Imminet" signs. They've been up for about 2 weeks all over the place near the Grand Central to Times Square Shuttle platforms. No markings on it indicate who put them there or what they're advertising. It's pretty darn annoying to say the least.

Roughly translated it means "The end of all things is near" or "We are approaching the end of all things" (Imminet is "moving toward" or "approaching").

I don't know WTH they're advertising, other than that someone has the impressive ability to look up Latin phrases and post them all over the place. Apparently at least two other things that *aren't* being advertised are going to get plenty of peripheral publicity. Oh well, ab nullo ex nullo.

griffnsv

No, you were quite clear. . . just wrong:

As for this comment: "Not a DVD release of “Millenium, (since when have you seen this kind of money spent on a DVD release for a low rated TV show?)"

If Fox is / was contractually obligated with 1013 Productions to publish all the season of "Millennium," regardless of sales, they'd certainly put a lot of money into advertising in hopes of recouping their investment.

So far, all the visual and contextual clues point to "Millennium;" (See my earlier post.) What proof do you offer in contrary to this ?

According to an article in today's New York Times, the ads are for Spielberg's "War of the Worlds" although they seem more appropriate for NBC's "Revelations." http://www.nytimes.com/2005/03/05/nyregion/05ads.html

I feel the need to point something out again, as well.

This HAS TO BE for an NBC product. The TV ads have only shown up on NBC stations. A major motion picture studio is not going to limit themselves like that. Not when they're throwing ads all over the buses and subways in NY. Fox would be advertising on Fox stations, too, at the very least.

griffinsv may be right, RomanG is probably not and the NYTimes (who is probably getting their info from this site or one like it) is dead wrong.

These mini-commericals have been airing saying OMNIUM FINIS IMMINET on NBC, and i have been trying to figure out what it means. I typed it into Yahoo, and Google, and turned up this website. So no one else knows what it is either......if its War of the Worlds.....its WAY to early (because it doesnt come out until JUNE 29) but im impressed with the mystery. If it is a TV show, i will be VERY dissapointed.

Wed, 03/09/2005 - 10:15 — Aida (not verified)

First off, the ads are not appearing solely on NBC. I have seen them on Sci Fi and on USA in just one day. Who knows how many networks in total are showing this ad campaign. Second, the campaign extends outside of the NYC area into other mass transit areas including Metro North train stops in CT and even around in Florida, IN ABUNDANCE. I am going to go with WoW or the NBC show seeing as this "Millenium" show obviously wasn't a big hit so why on earth would they spend such money on the campaign? Also, why would they choose to advertise primarily on NBC, USA, and SCI FI? Have we seen any ads on FOX yet? Finally, Calm down with the translations, we all got it the first 30 times you all decided to whip out the latin dict. (why you would need one for such a simple phrase baffles me, but more power to you all for the determination to warp the phrase to your liking)

Aida - Sci-Fi and USA are owned by NBC. I should have said NBC networks, not stations. Before anyone else "Ah-Ha's" this - Trio, Bravo and Univision are also NBC-owned.
http://www.nbc.com/nbc/NBC_Universal_Cable_Networks/
I thought Pax was, too. If anyone has seen these ads on Fox, CBS, ABC, Spike, TNT, the MTVs or any other network not in the NBC family, I'd like to hear it.

If anybody's still paying attention - the TV spots are getting longer, with lots of imagery that doesn't show up anywhere in any of the WotW media.

I also think it's Revelations. Check out the description on TV Tome.com and IMDB...it premieres on Wednesday, April 13th at 9 pm on NBC...

Re: Omnium Finis Imminet.
I had posted this on another Board(Terminus En)but after seeing a reference to 'Deadprogrammer.com' I wanted to copy and paste my Post here also regarding the cryptic phrase "Omnium Finis Imminent." Post follows below:

Subject:Latin Signs: UPDATE Omnium Finis Imminet

Comment:
From: Largopuff@aol.com Re: Omnium Finis Imminet New User posting as Anonymous as I have not yet received my password after registering with Terminus En)

I do not believe this is a promotion for Spielberg's upcoming 'War of The Worlds' movie. (In reference thereof 'War of The Worlds is referencing the "end of the world" via an alien invasion, etc.) Instead, I believe the rather cryptic "messages" that have been flashing on the television is a promo for the upcoming limited run televison series on NBC that is entitled 'Revelations'. (Plural.....not as in the Book of Revelation of St. John The Divine.) If you watch carefully, they are expanding the message in minute increments with each airing.(There is the Latin phrase:Omnium Finis Imminet....followed closely by fire, a cross and a newborn baby thus far to date.) The new limited run series 'Revelations' is set to begin in April. (If demographics are good and the ratings favorable, NBC may expand this into a full regular series.) The Latin to English translation is not clear cut. But NBC is making "play" at Revelation 1:3 which is: "Blessed IS he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time IS at hand." (The TV series 'Millennium' used this also as "The Time Is Near.") The full text of this Latin phrase is from the following prayer: "RERUM OMNIUM FINIS IMMINET. Sitis igitur cobril, et vigilantes ad orandum...cui est gloria at imperium, in secular seculorum. Amen." Briefly stated, "Omnium Finis Imminet" means "The end of all (humanity) is imminent." (Omnium is from the Latin word Omnius and means the common identity of all humanity.) The upcoming NBC series 'Revelations' uses a believer-skeptic pairing. Sister Josepha Montifore (Natascha McElhone) belongs to an order of nuns, at odds with the Vatican, that believes the Second Coming is imminent; her reluctant partner , Dr. Richard Massey (Bill Pullman), is a secular academic. In the pilot, there is a miracle (the shadow of Christ appears on a mountainside in Mexico), a Satanist cuts off his own finger without bleeding, and a baby--who may be the Antichrist or Christ reborn--impossibly survives a shipwreck. The signs and dialogue are all portentous ("....all the signs and symbols set forth in the Bible are currently in place for the end of days"). The heroes of this series are seeking to forestall the Apocalypse.

Apocalyptic theory and existential questions tend to be on the rise. Of course, the endlessly interpretable vision of Revelation (as in the Bible)also looks like the world at many other times in history.
There is a kind of vanity in Apocalyptic thinking as people eternally want to believe they are so special, their times so afflicted, that their tribulations outclass any others in history and that one's generation has screwed up the world so badly as to prompt the birth of the Antichrist. But, I suppose that is what makes for good TV. And this series, whether it remains as a limited run one or expands to a regular series, should definitely reach religious conservatives, (as it delivers a good old New Testament scare and also reach those seculars interested in Apocalyptic theory), but it could also easily offend one.....or both groups. Regardless, it should keep the debates at the office water coolers and threads/message boards such as this one heating up for quite some time. 'Revelations' airs on NBC beginning April 13th.

It is not WOTW, it is not a box set for Millenium, it is REVELATIONS.
I've been reading about this series for over a year, and I actually hear that it is going to be pretty good. They are actually using a budget for the effects and all that good stuff.

CP Quiro - what kind of effects are they going to have? I think the poster looks kind of cool.

wow...this is the most successful advertising campaign in the history of advertising. - do you realize that the people that made this show, or movie, or whatever it is, just got a few thousand more viewers because of people like you talking about it like its a fucking conspiracy....WOW.

Fri, 03/18/2005 - 00:53 — deadprogrammer

Well, they did build a little bit of buzz with this approach. Still, with an expensive campaign like that they only reached the people who pay attention to the unusual stuff (which is like what, less than 1/10 of one percent of the general population?). Most of the people I asked could not even recall seeing the ad.

Sun, 03/20/2005 - 02:33 — eric (not verified)

My Latin teacher saw this on TV and told all of his students. So far none of them have found anything on this, so I'll print out the poster to show them.

Ok I am back with some great news for all of you........I just saved a load of money by switching to GEICO......

No that is not it.....Heres the info and it goes out to all of the people that say that the phrase is some sort of message from WAR OF THE WORLDS. Guess again. I saw THE RING TWO the other day, and guess what.....a preview for the famed NBC show REVELATIONS appeared.....with the phrase below it. So, it is not War of the Worlds....and u heard it first from Xander. peace out.

Sun, 03/27/2005 - 09:39 — Thanatos Dei (not verified)

Do you guys read this stuff. It's amazing. Someone tells you what it is. Someone else tells you what it is. Still you go on with your speculation. The final post mentions that it is for "Revelations" and says "and u heard it first from Xander." Wrong, Xander. They heard it first from griffinsv. And now you believe.... What the hell is the matter with you people?!

Mon, 03/28/2005 - 03:33 — griffinsv (not verified)

this is the part where i laugh last i suppose? anyway, my hope now is that 'Revelations' lives up to all this hype.
