![]() What's All this Then?My name is Michael Krakovskiy, and this is my blog. Here’s what you might find interesting: My Gastronomic Adventures: I eat weird food - from 13 year old New Coke to Durian and parasitic fungi. My attempts to grow exotic plants: pineapples, coconuts, etc. My photos, mostly of New York City. My musings about architecture mostly illustrated with my own photos. Would you like to learn about a mental patient who died at 103 who served as a model for some very famous sculptures? How about Brooklyn’s ugliest building? How about a wooden skyscraper? I find myself frequently writing about logos. The most popular article I ever wrote is about the redesigns of the Starbucks logo. I wrote a series of “Best Sci-Fi You Haven’t Read” posts: Psywarrior Other topics that interest me include NYPD, New York City subway system, Japan, and things made out of titanium. On top of all of that, I seem to be interested in pigeions and Rupert Murdoch. Dear reader, please browse around. You are sure to find something interesting. I could really use some help in bringing in readership: subscribe to the rss feed, digg the stories (there’s a convenient button at the bottom of every article), link to my blog from yours, write some comments. I put in a lot of effort into writing, and I really appreciate your attention. If you don’t want all this pseudo-intellectual and want some lolcats? Please don’t go away. Here, I have that stuff too. Here, here’s another. And another. And another. I lied about not posting cat pictures. Running ThemesTV

Nope, just tell them that you were in the Jersey City Chase and overheard a sales rep talking about it. I’ve heard peoepl talking about it every time I’ve been in there over the last week, which is how long it’s been around.
Dreamhost are great. In a different class to the other ISP’s I have used. They have a passion for technology and customer service.
Bankwest in Australia offers 6% interest (5.25 + bonus .75 for the first year). I’ve had the money for a house deposit sitting in there for a few months and the extra few hundred every month doesn’t hurt :)
I’ve had an ING Direct account now for about three years. The interest rates are much higher than any brick and mortar bank and I’ve never had a problem getting to my money when I needed to.
You will need a checking account from another bank to “link” to your ING Direct account. This linked account will allow you to move money to and from the ING account.
I would recommend ING Direct without any reservations.
Oddly enough, I also use Dreamhost and would recommend them as well.
Look for a small local bank. You’ll usually get better service and your money stays local. (Something to feel GOOD about.)
The name ING Direct always irritates me when I see it.
I keep wanting to prefix the ING with a word - usually a rude one ;-)
Like: flippING direct (or something ruder)
James
Given the choice between a small local bank that will pay me a whopping 0.45% interest, or ING Direct, which will pay me 3.15% interest, I think the choice is obvious.
The only complaint I’ve ever heard about ING Direct is related to their 5-10 day hold on new deposits. I haven’t found this to be an issue myself, as I plan for it, but I can see how it might be annoying. But if you’re aware of it, I don’t think it’s a big deal.
ING Direct has the best rates I’ve found. Like someone said, if you don’t mind the delay in transactions, it’s the only way to go.
I forgot and added this some time ago in LJ:
ING works very well for me. I got them linked to my main bank account, and put some money away automatically from each paycheck. Rate is 3.15% there now!
One drawback is that if you need the money from there, it can take 3-5 days, so withdrawals require some planning.
I’ve been using Dreamhost for quite some time. They are great. They randomly upgrade my (and everyone elses) service during the year, and their little newsletters have that “personal / some dude had fun writing it” touch.
I think I’ve only had one instance of downtime. But my site is really small.
You need to shop around for the best rates. I have an INGdirect account that I use as a fallback option for my cash, but both Chase and Emigrant Bank are offering 3.5% right now. The savings rates keep changing as promotions expire, so you have to stay abreast with the game and not let your money sit.
Yeah, I guess I gotta call those ratbastards at Chase first. Does that 3.5% promotion have a name?
It’s probably a subdivision of Penetrode, Inc.
Sweet. Thank you.
I mostly do not pick businesses to patronize based on the warm fuzzy feeling that said patronizing might bring me. Small banks give the worst rates ever, at least the ones that I’ve seen do.
See, when I buy coffee at Joe’s, the feeling GOOD comes from the fact that the coffee tastes super awesome. When I buy stuff from Amazon, the GOOD feeling comes from the fact that the prices are great, interface is superusable and delivery is cheap and fast.
dreamhost has treated me just fine as well. some small outages now again that are quickly repaired. the price is good too. totally recommended.
Add me to the Dreamhost bandwagon. I just moved all my stuff from being hosted on a server sitting next to me to them. The transition has been very easy and very fast. Their customer support was awesome and I like that I get tons of great features and they just keep piling new stuff on all the time - FREE. I was literally able to just FTP my sites over and change the database addresses and passwords (after setting up the new DBs of course). Everything just worked. Sorry, I know I’m going on about them, but my experience so far has been amazing.
I use www.nearlyfreespeech.net. They only charge you for bandwidth and storage, no monthly fees (and it’s ridiculously cheap, to boot.) They’ll give you ssh and mySQL and ftp and all that good stuff as well.
Hosting: I can’t recommend TextDrive highly enough. Good prices, excellent service.
ING Direct: I’ve had an ING Direct account for about 4 years, also very good value. There’s no secret bad parts.

So far everybody who commented is happy with them. I guess it’s a done deal than - I am moving there. Thanks!
That’s pretty sweet. You, foreigners, have it good with taxes and banking, I guess. :) Although I hear that in Japan the banks pay something like 0.00001% or something like that.
Um, prices-wise, Textdrive is a bit pricey.
500 megs / $2 bandwidth is not a good deal, fer sure.
I use hasweb.com and I really like them. Good prices and fast support.
TextDrive certainly isn’t cheap, but since my move there 2 months ago I’ve been very impressed with the features and service. It’s a very robust service, and I personally am happy to pay a little more for it.
ING is run entirely by crazed ferrets who will rip out your colon and strangle you with it, if given the slightest opportunity. Beware the ferrets!
I’ve had and ING Direct savings account for about three years and it’s been excellent to me. The interest rates are great, and their online services are easy to use. I would recommend them to anyone.
There was a good thread on the TextDrive Community Forums recently that discussed the fact that TD is slightly more expensive than many other providers, and why that is and why they’re worth the money.
$50 off a 2 year deal. “deal50yr25mo” for dreamhost
Verizon only good provider in NYC? I would agree if this were 2 years ago, and I was the type that wouldn’t even think of switching. Six months ago I switched to AT&T / Cingular, and I have never looked back. You can also get a good deal on a Treo with new service sign up.
Well, I used to have Cingular service back when I made a boneheaded decision to get Visor Phone. It was a crappy phone and a crappy services. I mean, like the worst. Doing this a second time would be like stepping on a garden rake twice.
On the other hand, yeah, the deal is better, they probably got a better network by now, and Treo seems very nice. Plus I think we have a corporate discount with AT&T…. I might look into this.
For hosting, I really like JTLnet. They have good prices and free shell access:

Secondly, I went from Chase to Commerce (you are in NY/NJ right?). Commerce Bank is super great!
