Greek Cups of New York

This is a short follow-up to my two older articles, New York in a Cup and NYC’s Syntactic Sugar.

The shelves in my cubicle are currently hosting an small exhibition called “Greek Cups of New York”. I collected these cups over a period of a few months (unfortunately these days most bodegas serve coffee in cups marred with bank ads). I took the cups home over the weekend to take some pictures.

Here it is in all its glory, Sherri Cup Inc, Anthora, the cup that started it all.

And here are some of the ripoffs that I could find. Evergreen diner actually has a custom cup with the pre-911 skyline. It’s my favorite.

[Update] CRAP. By pure coincidence NYT has an aricle about a guy with a humongous collection of these cups the same day I finally got around to posting about my own tiny collection. Damn, it’s so fricking hard to be even semi-original (I learned about the history of the cups from another website as well).

  1. I’ve never watched Letterman much, but I do remember the deli. I should check it out for cups next time I’m in the area.

  69. Hey, I love your blog… always something interesting to read. Anyways, I agree about the difficulty being original.. you almost have to ask, “what would nobody in their right mind want to do?” Still, and perhaps even more certainly, some else will have done that. Ha!

  70. Sorry, but “coffee, regular” isn’t just specific to NYC– in Boston it’s called “reglah cawfee.” (This confused me for the longest time because in Upstate NY where I grew up, “regular coffee” meant “drip, not espresso.”)

  71. Thank you, Dingo. Yeah, I’ve seen that article. It’s hard to be original in the logo creation business. Actually it’s hard to be original in almost any business. Especially in blogging – lately I haven’t put out much original stuff myself.

  72. Ha ha. Didn’t know that even though I’ve been to Boston a bunch of times. But do they have scooped bagles?

  73. I love watching the old episodes of law and order from the 1990′s where they’re always drinking New york city coffee from those same little blue cups.

I’m not sure if anyone else on the web has stolen this as an original idea, but you could try a collection of NYC chinese food take out containers. Up here in Canada it never comes in those little white boxes you always see on TV……

    Sean

  74. I think most of the takeout containers here are just plain white with just a few more upscale places having those red round containers.

  75. You definitley see them on all the New York tv shows. Up here in Toronto and the suburbs it always comes in flat round containers, metal or plastic, about two inches tall….
